EDIBLE SUPERHEROES AT THE NEW YORK CHOCOLATE SHOW

Via the Telegraph (UK), the theme of the 11th Annual New York Chocolate Show is superheroes, including Bat Girl and Lara Croft. “The edible catwalk extravaganza”, which runs til Sunday, is “an annual weekend-long event where 60 chocolatiers pack into a 55,000 square foot venue offering free tastings and professional demonstrations of chocolate recipes.”

And how about an Obama reference for extra credit: “Narciso Rodriguez, who designed Michelle Obama’s red-and-black election-night dress, worked with chocolatier Jacques Torres to create a bodybuilder outfit…”

NICOTINE NUTS IN NEW YORK?

Because of workers sneaking cigarettes in the former Deutsche Bank building, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation has resorted to using tobacco-sniffing dogs in the condemned building.

“Careless smoking by workers inside the condemned building is blamed for the Aug. 18, 2007, fire that killed two firefighters,” according to the NY Post.

OK, let’s see if I’m following this circuitous story correctly: According to the NY Daily News, Jif, the peanut butter company, just held their sixth annual “contest for the most creative peanut butter sandwich,”.

At the contest in SoHo, a kid named Samuel Sosa won a $25,000 scholarship for his recipe, which wasn’t actually a sandwich recipe at all, rather a recipe for peanut butter fortune cookies — have I got that right?

I read somewhere a couple of years ago that white Americans differ from other cultures because of our desire for privacy in public. Whereas people of other cultures expect to mingle with other humans upon leaving the house, we white folks expect to avoid it, we aspire to being in our own little bubbles, in control of the temperature, the music, and free from interactions with others.

Over time, however, I’ve refined that notion in my mind as being more specifically about folks from car cultures, less about New Yorkers. In general, New Yorkers often seem to enjoy unexpected, incidental interactions with strangers, and the proverbial random acts of kindness that are, for many of us, a fact of New York life.

But nothing exemplifies the “privacy in public” bent as well as a recent Ottawa Citizen article about the makers of those noisy little TVs now found in the back of NYC taxis. Hyping the Canadian company, Mobile Knowledge, the piece quotes a number of high-strung tourists who portray the devices as indispensable during their NYC taxi rides. The TVs are said to relax passengers and take their minds off myriad stresses that arise during the average taxi ride in New York City. And among all the possible stressors, none is as stress-inducing as interacting with the driver: so nerve-wracking!

One woman cited in the article had visited from Atlanta. She describes how the little TVs helped her cope with her taxi rides: “I looked at the screen to avoid looking at the crazy drivers,” as if suffering from some disorder which renders her unable to deal with strangers in public. (Could a mental health professional help the woman? Is there a medication she should start? Or stop?)

Another man describes the devices as “an excellent distraction from the utter insanity” of a New York cab ride. “My wife and I travelled to the city and had at least three near-death experiences in three different cabs. Thankfully, they were all equipped with the monitors that distracted us.”

Now, it’s possible that this man has never traveled on a major thoroughfare in a large city, and has never experienced typical, aggressive rush hour traffic anywhere. But as for “at least three near-death experiences in three different cabs,” and his generalizing NYC cab rides as “utter insanity,” if not an anxiety disorder he at least has an acute hyperbole problem.

Next, “Vancouver native Antony Page, who…travels regularly to New York City…finds the devices ‘absolutely fantastic,’” according to the Ottawa Citizen. He “believes the technology is a big advantage to avoiding cab driver music and providing the passenger with some sense of control.”

How anyone could feel an inadequate sense of control while someone is chauffeuring them around is beyond me. Sounds like another tourist who has issues around interacting with strangers, a palpable anxiety disorder… C’mon folks, how hard is it to ask, “Could you please turn down the music?” Breaking news: cabbies work for tips.

It all reminds me of the last few times I’ve visited my mom in Missouri. I’ve noticed that it’s difficult to interact with strangers in town. For example, accidentally bumping another shopper in the supermarket check-out line doesn’t result in the kind of mutual, perfunctory apology familiar on the east coast. St Louisans seem to stare down at their feet, or anywhere else to avoid eye contact. And the flipside: more than once in NYC I’ve been with a visitor from the heartland who has failed to say “sorry” to someone they’ve accidently bumped, e.g., on the subway.

To be sure, there are plenty of things to love about other parts of the country and the people from there. Of course. However, as the Ottawa Citizen inadvertently reminds us, New Yorkers seem to have a better grasp on the whole carpe diem thing. And we stand out from the crowd by our ability to mutter a friendly “sorry” in a grocery store. And our ability to talk to cab drivers. And even the occasional stranger.

2008 RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE: Getting a feel of good and bad in New York

OCTOBER 27.

It’s just before 6pm and I’m standing in the visitors’ line at John F. Kennedy International Airport. I’m clutching my Malaysian passport and preparing myself for the third degree…

I wish I’d shaved. Because somehow, I’m always the one being randomly checked… as long as there [are] people out there who look[ ] like me intent on blowing things up…

But I was wrong… The gentleman at the counter…was courteous, polite and professional. Hell, he was friendly. The entire process took under 10 minutes.

7pm. I’m on a bus to Grand Central Station. It’s like a veritable nursery rhyme… it’s like Mother Goose threw up in here. A gentleman who looks like Humpty Dumpty waddles in and takes up the row behind me. Next to me there’s a woman who looks like she lives in a shoe… I ask her who she thinks is going to win on Tuesday.

That was my first mistake. She tells me that she’s voting for McCain. She tells me that America is at war with Muslims, Obama is a Muslim and she isn’t going to vote for a Muslim. I’m off to a great start.

I say to her: “Ma’am, I can assure you, that isn’t the case. Neither is Obama a Muslim, not that it should matter, nor is America at war with Muslims”…

She’s speaking at me now, in a tone of voice that is attracting attention. Peter the Pumpkin-Eater is looking at me funny. The Three Little Indians at the back are pretending like it isn’t happening. The bus driver, Korean I think, just smiles. Serves me right for using public transportation. I move to another seat to avoid the crazy [person]. We arrive at Grand Central. Tired, weary, and just a little afraid, I make my way to the hotel. The old lady goes back to her shoe.

Could it get any nuttier? (Starting with an international journalist taking a bus from JFK to Grand Central Station.)

Call me crazy, but the most beautiful, amazing thing just happened. I have a cheap hair clip from H&M that’s perfect for my hair. Hair doesn’t fall out, doesn’t pinch head, etc. And it broke 2 days ago. So today, I pull out this purse that I seriously haven’t used in 2 years… I open it up, and find the exact same hair thing, but not broken.

Someone’s alarm clock actually goes off every single night at midnight. One of my neighbors. I mean, why in god’s name would you set your alarm clock for midnight?? I can only conclude that it’s a psychological experiment to drive their neighbors crazy. Perhaps a bet on who’s going to violently knock on everyone’s apartment door first… Every day I am thankful for my “bad ear.” I highly value being able to sleep on my “good ear” to muffle everything even if the trade off is asking everyone to repeat what they’re saying and missing all the under the breath insults.

A MORE APPEALING CHOKING VICTIM POSTER

Most people are familiar enough with the standard, required Choking Victim poster which hangs in most restaurants around town, informing us how to save such a victim using the Heimlich maneuver. Well here’s an alternative version:

This version hangs in Porchetta in the East Village. According to Slashfood, it was designed by Alex Holden for a Cuban-themed bar, because they couldn’t deal with the standard version. He had this extra copy, which he passed on to Porchetta.

A LESSON FROM SNL ON THE STATE OF COMEDY

Somewhere in NYC, Carla Thompson teaches something, but I’m not sure what or where. Anyway, the following, which reportedly happened to her in her classroom the other day, is the kind of thing that can happen to a New Yorker at some point:

Former Cosmopolitan Magazine senior editor Betsy Perry, now NYC’s Commissioner for Women’s Issues, brings us this heart-wrenching tale of upscale economizing from the Upper East Side:

I was part of a conversation at Settemezzo about what one might give up first in hard times — Botox or a vacation. The vacation was first to go… There’s still a lot of Upper East Side streaked blond hair, but I’m now into the trashy rock star look myself with lots of roots thanks to my color wizard Frank Friscioni at Madison Avenue’s Oscar Blandi salon.

While I never pay less than $250 for a half head of streaks, I’m still saving since I gave up the perfect blond look which needed $100 touch ups every two weeks. Frank confided that even his laid off Goldman Sachs clients — men and women — aren’t giving up hair color. What he does hear is economizing in other areas including taking doggy bags home with unfinished dinners to be recycled for next day’s lunch…

Described as an expert on international security and strategy, Philip Bobbitt’s books have been read by presidential candidates McCain and Obama, and endorsed by Kissinger and Tony Blair.

“Most students see him as a dedicated teacher who happens to lead an impossibly cultured and glamorous life,” the Observer says. “He can blow smoke rings, and sponsors a national poetry prize in honor of his late mother.” And, he “rotates seasonally among his homes, and can’t shake his habit of a nightly cigar and scotch-and-soda.”

According to a teaching assistant for his classes, Bobbitt “teaches class on Monday and Tuesday and flies around the world solving the world’s problems Wednesday through Sunday.” Another says, “His mannerisms just kind of ooze a James Bondian kind of quality.”

As for us, we’re not sure about any “matinee-idol looks”, as abovethelaw.com puts it. To us Bobbitt looks more like 007 author Ian Fleming than any incarnation of his Bond character:

Dark bars are no bueno. Wanting to test out how much lighting is a factor in the [mis]conception of one’s attractiveness, I went around taking random pictures of people that looked not bad in the dark. FAIL. Fail, fail, fail. Who let the dogs out?…

I don’t know how things are done in Europe but it is not appropriate to pick up a girl and bang her head on the ceiling, booty bump her and knock her over, and then ask her to dinner. FAIL… If your opening lines are “You’re beautiful”, “Let me buy you a drink”, “I love Asian women” or anything other than properly introducing yourself, FAIL.

Queens resident “Sam Lal…is convinced the mysterious blossom is an incarnation of the elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh — and neighbors and friends are flocking to see it,” according to the NY Daily News.

“The nearly 4-foot-tall flower grew in June and began to resemble an elephant’s head and trunk in August. Lal said that the ailments that had plagued him for months disappeared.”

THIS BEARD HAS FLOWN

At one point a New York judge, Philip Straniere, decided that growing a beard would be a good way to protest the capping of NY state judges at $136,700 for the past ten years. However, he changed his mind recently and shaved.

Blogger Alice Bachini-Smith came out of her nutshell last week when she questioned the sanity of the entire population of New York City.

“I can’t figure out why on earth anyone would want to live there,” the Austin resident wrote.

She accepts that a certain level of craziness is inherent to life in our city, it’s “like pizza and the Macy’s parade” she analogizes. But there are still many things here that are too crazy, too nonsensical for the British-born woman’s tastes.

Posting as “The Mad Housewife”, Bachini-Smith tells us she has been living in the US for a few years. During that time, she asserts, she has managed to figure America out, with the exception of one place: New York City. Situated 1,500 miles to the northeast, it remains elusive to her, and of her brief visits here in the past she says simply, “it didn’t grab me.”

On one hand she acknowledges the positives about New York: it is America’s “unofficial capital” and “the most recognisable city to an urban European.” And it is “more civilised, polite, reasonable and pleasant than a big European city.” On the other hand, she lists the things that give her pause, preventing her from truly ‘getting’ New York City.

High-rise buildings, for example: “all those people living in the sky! How can that work?!,” she demands.

Also, NYC’s public transportation, which transports 4.5 million of us every weekday: only “one train station for almost all the trains,” she complains, adding an emphatic “are you crazy?!”

And finally, the aforementioned Macy’s Day Parade: Ms. Bachini-Smith has seen it on television — it doesn’t seem like her cup of tea.

Obviously, this mad housewife Alice Bachini-Smith provides some serious food for thought for 8 million of us here in New York City, and we’re left with one burning question: what on earth are we doing here??

(On the other hand maybe some of us are thinking this: somewhere in England, a village is missing one of its nuts!)
